Hand made in France C.1940 or so, may I offer this small religious devotional entirely made of cloth, paper, embroidery thread and an early celluloid covering. Called an AGNUS DEI, the round disc is still attached to its original presentation card. The coloring is sort of a salmon pink and there is a red dot to the front which would indicate the location of the wax dot.
Wax dot you ask? Well, every year after holy services at the Vatican, excess wax is scraped from the candle holders in the cathedral. It is collected and then distibuted at a certain time each year to various organizations as well as lay people. It is then inserted into small devotionals that are sold to help support the Catholic groups (usually nuns) that provide the handcrafting. Since admission to the Vatican during services is a "hard to come by process" the small Agnus Dei represents God within the home; in other words, every home can have a small piece of the Vatican in their house!
The devotional measures 3/4" high/across without the ribbon. The card measures 2-1/4" x 1-3/4".
A wonderful collectible!
