From Italy and dating to the 1950s or so may I offer this hand painted wooded box. Possibly from Venice, possible from Naples, the wood of the container is covered in gesso and then handpainted with florals and flourishes. The main colors are hunter green and gold while the florals are pink/red and light/dark green. The inside and base of the box are brown.
Condition: Very nice for its age; a bit chippy here and there but no major portions of the gesso missing. These type of boxes were collected avidly when the Shabby Chic period was at its height. While this isn't the most ornate of designs, it is still a much better piece than the stenciled pieces of the 1960s.
Hallmarks: None - the box is possibly a Florentia piece but since there is no paper label at the bottom, I am unsure as to the maker although he/she/it is definitely Italian.
Size: Stands 1-11/16" and is 4-1/16" x 3".
Final Comments: A wonderful collectible that looks great among vintage painted tole items!
