Dating to the late 1800s (the Victorian period) may I offer this unique button found at an estate here in the St. Louis area. Entirely hand carved in France of natural material, possibly ox bone or Dieppe, the setting is silver and the reverse is a shank back. There is also a handwritten label but I can glean no info from it other than the button is old!
Condition: A light cleaning and polish are clearly needed, as to the panel, a see a small flea bit at the edge which could be sanded down and smoothed flat.
Metal Content: Silver though the exact content is indeterminate. If European, which I suspect, the metal could be anything from 800 to 950 Silver.
Hallmarks: None to the setting - just the paper label.
Size: Large at 1-1/4" across/high.
Weight: 4.8 grams
Final Comments: A wonderful antique find!
