May I offer....
AGE: C.1930 or so - Art Deco Era
ITEM: From France, a celluloid icon - most likely a baby crib protector (protection against evil for the newborn) - featuring a center panel (metal) depicting the Apparition at Lourdes - Bernadette Soubirous kneeling before the Blessed Holy Virgin Mary in the Grotto at Lourdes. This type of souvenir item from Notre Dame de Lourdes would have been purchased and given to the mother and father of a newborn; it would be attached to the baby's crib so that no harm would come to the baby while in the nursery. While many families could afford French Dieppe Ivory Croix de Berceau (crib cross), hand carved and embellished with the face/head of an angel, the common folk could only afford celluloid (early plastic, hard plastic) or even "of lesser value" pieces. This particular item would probably have been purchased at a modest price range.
CONDITION: Excellent with no burn marks to the celluloid. Natural patina to the center metal panel with no loss to the stamping of the design.
METAL CONTENT: Tin? Silverplate? Base metal? Something like that.
HALLMARKS: None that I can find - not even on the center panel.
SIZE: From top ring to bottom measures 5-1/2"; width is 4-7/16".
FINAL COMMENTS: Just ready for the appropriate ribbon - pink or blue.
