May I offer.....
AGE: C.1900 or so
ITEM: From Kreigshauser Mortuary located in St. Louis, Mo, comes this "Compliments of" bamboo fan - handpainted with a single pink rose. Summers are hot here in the Midwest and back in the old days, a fan was a necessity! While I have no provenance, it is possible the fan may have been a giveaway souvenir of the St. Louis Worlds Fair in 1904. Since the fair was held during the summer, it is possible the Mortuary took a stall at the fair to advertise the fact that they were doing businss in St. Louis.
CONDITION: Very nice for its age with just a bit of age darkening. The slats have to be carefully splayed so that the full view of the rose is visible. The original ribbon is present and is not damaged though a couple of the slats go a little "wider" when spread out. The edges of the slats are highlighted with gold.
HALLMARKS: Compliments of Kriegshauser on the front slat.
SIZE: When open - 10-1/2" x 6-3/16". When closed, 6" x 1" (at the widest point).
FINAL COMMENTS: The story of Krieghauser Mortuary-West Chapel begins in 1891, when Herman Kriegshauser established a St. Louis-based funeral service business with his son, George. The company continues to operate in the St. Louis area today.
